Hukum paling fundamental dalam urusan rangkaian listrik adalah Hukum Ohm. Teori ini menjelaskan hubungan antara tegangan (voltase), arus listrik, dan hambatan (resistor), yaitu nilai arus listrik yang melewati suatu konduktor atau penghantar aliran listrik berbanding lurus dengan voltase dan berbanding terbalik dengan resistor. Selanjutnya, perbedaan potensial pada sumber daya tersebut menyebabkan adanya arus listrik yang mengalir pada konduktor. Arus listrik (notasi <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">I<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">) menyatakan banyaknya muatan listrik yang mengalir dalam satuan waktu. Sekecil apapun, konduktor selalu memiliki hambatan. Jenis konduktor yang paling sering digunakan dan dijumpai adalah kawat. Pompa bekerja karena adanya perbedaan tekanan pada air sama seperti baterai yang bekerja karena adanya perbedaan potensial antarkedua kutubnya. Beda potensial ini menyatakan perbedaan jumlah elektron yang berada pada dua kutub suatu sumber daya listrik. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Berikutnya, perbedaan tekanan pada air membuat air mengalir dari tekanan tinggi ke tekanan rendah. &nbsp;Pada rangkaian listrik, hal tersebut serupa dengan adanya perbedaan potensial sumber daya yang menyebabkan arus listrik mengalir dari kutub positif ke kutub negatif. Lalu, bagaimana dengan resistor? Kutub dengan jumlah elektron lebih sedikit bertanda positif sementara kutub dengan jumlah elektron lebih banyak bertanda negatif. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Kemudian telah dipelajari juga mengenai arus listrik yang menyatakan banyaknya muatan listrik yang mengalir per satuan waktu dengan arah dari kutub positif menuju kutub negatif. Atau justru sebaliknya, elektron yang harus mengalir dari kutub positif ke kutub negatif? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Sebenarnya perbedaan arah ini semata disebabkan oleh sejarah, Quipperian. Tujuh puluh lima tahun sebelum Ohm mengemukakan teori fundamentalnya, arah arus listrik sudah ditemukan lebih dulu oleh Benjamin Franklin. Ia bukan hanya seorang presiden ke-6 dari negara bagian Pennsylvania, Amerika Serikat, tetapi juga seorang ilmuwan, penulis, penemu, dan aktivis, <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">lho<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Pada tahun 1750, secara sembarang, Franklin memberi label positif dan negatif pada masing-masing kutub dari sumber daya listrik karena ia belum mengetahui tentang sifat elektron.
