Bangsa Yunani, India, dan China mengenal magnet melalui batu-batu kecil yang secara alami mampu menarik logam, seperti besi dan baja. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Batu tersebut bernama <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">magnetum lodestone<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> &ndash; nama diserap dari bahasa Inggris Tengah yang juga berakar dari bahasa Yunani &ndash; yaitu <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">magnitis<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> dan <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">lithos<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">. <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Magnitis<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> sendiri mengarah pada wilayah di Yunani tempat batu tersebut ditemukan, yaitu Magnesia, sementara arti dari <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">lithos<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> adalah <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">batu<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">. Jadi, <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">magnetum lodestone<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> berarti batu yang berasal dari Magnesia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Magnesia yang berada di Yunani memang seringkali disamakan dengan wilayah bernama Magnesia (Manisa) yang berada di Turki. Padahal, kedua merupakan wilayah yang sangat berbeda dan terpisah jarak sekitar 1.000 &ndash; 1.200 km melalui jalur darat. Bermula pada tahun 1820 ketika Hans Christian &Oslash;rsted (red: Oersted), seorang ahli fisika dan kimia berkebangsaan Denmark, menemukan hipotesis yang menyatakan keterkaitan antara listrik dengan gejala kemagnetan. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Ia menyatakan bahwa arus listrik yang dialirkan pada konduktor bisa menciptakan medan magnet di sekitarnya. Kesimpulan ini diperoleh ketika dirinya mengamati jarum kompas yang didekatkan pada kawat berarus listrik.
