Siapa sangka jika bentuk molekul inilah yang menyebabkan perbedaan sifat fisis dan kimia suatu senyawa, misalnya titik leleh maupun titik didih air berbeda dengan metana, kerapatan amonia berbeda dengan metana, dan sebagainya. Lalu, bagaimana bentuk molekul suatu senyawa?<\/p>\n<h3><strong>1.&nbsp;Bentuk molekul berdasarkan teori domain elektron<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Pada molekul sederhana, jika atom pusatnya memuat dua sampai enam pasangan elektron, maka bentuk molekulnya dapat diramalkan menggunakan teori VSEPR (<em>Vallence Shell Electron Pair Repulsion<\/em>) atau dikenal dengan istilah tolakan pasangan elektron di kulit terluar (teori domain elektron). Domain elektron adalah kedudukan elektron atau daerah keberadaan elektron di atom pusat. Untuk menentukan bentuk molekul berdasarkan teori domain elektron ini, Quipperian harus mengetahui jumlah pasangan elektron ikatan (PEI) dan pasangan elektron bebas (PEB). PEI adalah pasangan elektron yang digunakan untuk berikatan dengan atom lain, sedangkan PEB adalah pasangan elektron yang tidak digunakan untuk berikatan. Lalu, apa sih prinsip dasar teori domain elektron ini?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>PEI dan PEB menempati posisi di sekitar atom pusat dalam suatu molekul, sehingga terjadi gaya tolak-menolak antara pasangan elektron tersebut. Gaya tolak-menolak yang dihasilkan harus serendah mungkin. Artinya, pasangan elektron akan berada pada posisi terjauh.<\/li>\n<li>Posisi PEI berpengaruh pada arah ikatan kovalen dan bentuk molekulnya.<\/li>\n<li>PEB akan mengalami gaya tolakan yang lebih besar daripada PEI, sehingga PEB akan mendorong PEI agar lebih berdekatan. Akibatnya, PEB bisa menempati ruang yang luas.
