Jumlah dan bentuk rantai atom karbon itulah yang menyebabkan atom karbon memiliki kekhasan yang tidak dimiliki atom lain. Atom karbon memiliki 4 elektron valensi<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Berdasarkan konfigurasi elektronnya, atom karbon memiliki 4 elektron valensi atau 4 elektron di kulit terluarnya. Nah, keberadaan elektron valensi ini yang berperan penting untuk membentuk ikatan kimia. Setiap atom mampu membentuk kestabilan, termasuk juga atom karbon.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Untuk mencapai kestabilan, atom ini membutuhkan 4 elektron lain dengan cara membentuk ikatan kovalen. Hanya atom karbonlah yang mampu membentuk ikatan kovalen 4 buah untuk mencapai keadaan oktet.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>2. Jari-jari atom karbon relatif kecil<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jika dilihat di tabel periodik unsur, atom karbon berada di periode 2. Artinya, atom karbon hanya memiliki 2 kulit terluar. Dengan demikian, jari-jari atomnya juga pasti kecil. Besar kecilnya jari-jari atom berpengaruh pada kuat tidaknya ikatan yang terbentuk. Mengingat jari-jari atom karbon relatif kecil, ikatan kovalen yang terbentuk akan relatif kuat.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>3. Atom karbon dapat membentuk rantai karbon<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kehadiran 4 elektron valensi di atom karbon, nampaknya membawa sejuta manfaat bagi umat. Bagaimana tidak, dengan adanya 4 elektron valensi inilah atom karbon mampu membentuk ikatan kovalen dengan rantai karbon yang sangat panjang. Baik ikatan kovalen tunggal, rangkap 2, bahkan rangkap 3. Ikatan jenuh (ikatan tunggal)<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Terjadinya ikatan jenuh jika masing-masing atom karbon memberikan sebuah electron. Hal itu akan membentuk sepasang electron milik bersama. Ikatan tidak jenuh (ikatan rangkap)<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ikatan jenuh adalah jenis ikatan di mana dua buah atom karbon memberikan lebih dari satu elektron. Akibatnya, jumlah pasangan elektron yang dimiliki bersama lebih dari satu pasang. Rantai karbon alifatik<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rantai karbon alifatik merupakan contoh rantai atom terbuka yang bisa berupa rantai lurus maupun bercabang. Contoh senyawa yang memiliki rantai karbon alifatik adalah <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">n<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-butana dengan rumus molekul C<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">H<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Untuk rumus molekul yang sama, contoh rantai alifatik bercabang bisa Quipperian lihat pada 2-metilpropana. Rantai ini memiliki ikatan rangkap di dalamnya. Rantai karbon siklik dibedakan menjadi dua berdasarkan komponen penyusunnya.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Karbosiklik adalah senyawa karbon siklik yang memiliki satu atom C di rantai lingkarnya.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heterosiklik adalah senyawa yang memiliki atom lain selain C di dalam rantai sikliknya.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><b>3. Rantai karbon aromatis<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rantai karbon aromatis merupakan salah satu bentuk kekhasan atom karbon yang tidak akan bisa ditemukan pada atom-atom lain. Pada rantai karbon aromatis, terdapat 6 atom karbon yang membentuk rantai siklik dengan ikatan rangkap yang berselang-seling.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adanya ikatan rangkap yang berselang-seling ini akan memicu terbentuknya awan-awan elektron di sekeliling ikatan rangkap.
