Tentunya, suku-suku tertentu mewakili pola tertentu. Dengan kata lain, tidak boleh sembarang suku dengan pola acak. Secara matematis, sigma dilambangkan sebagai \u03a3 (bukan E). Lambang itu diambil dari abjad Yunani, yaitu S (kapital). Mengapa demikian? Karena pada zaman itu, para ilmuwan Yunani menggunakan istilah SUM untuk menjumlahkan data-data hasil penelitian mereka.
