Artinya, rata-rata merupakan perwakilan kuantitas dari sekelompok data. Besar kecilnya nilai rata-rata dipengaruhi oleh jumlah semua data dan banyaknya data. Pada suatu penelitian, rata-rata berfungsi sebagai tolok ukur nilai yang mendekati hasil penelitian sebenarnya. Misalnya, suatu sekolah mengadakan lomba kebersihan antarkelas. Penilaian lomba mengacu pada beberapa kriteria, di mana setiap kriteria memiliki skor tertentu. Nah, hasil akhir penilaian merupakan rata-rata dari keseluruhan skor di tiap kriteria.
